Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce

These Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce will help you start grilling season off right. They’re full of herb-licious flavor and topped with refreshing mint pesto and yogurt dill sauce.

Meat Mixture for Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce

You can easily find lamb already ground; however, I purchased lamb shoulder chops, removed the meat from the bone and grinded the meat with a meat grinder. I originally purchased my meat grinder to make venison jerky in the winter months after hunting; however, I have found many more uses for the little workhorse.

I left a little of the fat in the ground meat so the burgers did not dry out while cooking. These burgers do not have to be grilled, searing them in iron skillet on high heat would work great, too! But it’s great to get outside and you cannot beat the flavor of the grill.

Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce Raw

After mixing the ground lamb with the herbs and spices, shape the burgers. I always tend to eyeball the sizes, but you can weigh each patty to specifications of your choice. I was able to make 4 nice sized patties with 2 pounds of meat. Whatever you do while the lamb burgers are cooking, do not, I repeat do not press or flatten the patties. You will loose all the juices and the burgers will dry out.

Just so you all know, these Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce almost did not happen. The grill tried to fight me every step of the way, especially with the lighting. But hey, when you look at the photos, we  successfully ended up with fabulous Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce. 

Moral(s) of the story, do not be defeated with anything in life, especially not a grill.

Instead of using hamburger buns, I used Tandoori Naan from Trader Joes. They have a couple of different flavors. If you have never been to Trader Joes and you have one nearby, drop everything immediately, do not pass go or collect $200.00, and run to Trader Joes. I am not an affiliate, just a genuine lover of everything Trader Joe’s has to offer. Another nice addition to these Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce was the 10-Minute Kale Salad I served on the side.

Grilled Lamb Burgers with Mint Pesto & Yogurt Dill Sauce

Ingredients

Lamb Burgers

  • 1 1/2 – 2 lbs ground lamb
  • 2 Sprigs Dill, fresh
  • 1 Sprig Rosemary, fresh
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander
  • 1/2 tsp Aleppo Pepper
  • Kosher Salt, to taste
  • Black Pepper, to taste

Mint Pesto

  • 1 Cup Mint, fresh
  • 1/2 Cup Almonds
  • 1/3 Cup Olive Oil
  • Kosher Salt, to taste
  • Black Pepper, to taste

Yogurt Dill Sauce

  • 1 /2 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 3 Sprigs Dill, fresh
  • 1-2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • Kosher Salt, to taste
  • Black Pepper, to taste

 

Directions

Lamb Burgers

  1. Mix the ground lamb with the herbs and spices. Shape the burgers and place on heated grill.
  2. Cook on each side for 5-6 minutes, taking care not to press (or flatten) the burgers.
  3. While the burgers are cooking, prepare the mint pesto and yogurt dill sauce. These can also be prepared ahead of time.

Mint Pesto

  1. Mix all ingredients, except the salt and pepper, in food processor and pulse it a few times. Add more olive oil if necessary.
  2. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Yogurt Dill Sauce

  1. Mix yogurt, lemon juice, dill, salt and pepper.
  2. Stir to combine well. Note: The thicker you want your sauce, the less lemon juice you should use.

Yours are grilled to perfection, that yogurt and dill sauce is absolutely fantastic, so refreshing and a lot better than just mayo or ketchup. The mint pesto also goes very well with the burgers.   11. I love a good burger. My Mom loves lamb but doesn’t typically love a traditional beef burger so I’m thinking she might really enjoy this.

  12. This sounds delicious. I love ground lamb but have never ground it on my own since I don’t have a meat grinder! Love the flavor of the yogurt dill sauce with this too!

  15. That would be one Epic meal for sure if I make this 🙂 We eat lamb once or twice every month but I never tried making burgers with them. The recipe looks so easy to make and delicious!
